Re:19 Days & Counting
Re:Site Plan
So after considering the last scheme and (with Kate's help) coming to the realization that the benches and stands were 18m away from the field... I re-considered the layout. Same idea as other schemes we have come up with some idea of tranformability.
Re:Rainwater Harvesting
Here a some great links:
http://www.rainwaterharvesting.org/urban/Components.htm
http://www.eng.warwick.ac.uk/DTU/pubs/wp/wp55/index.html
http://www.solarengineering.co.za/rainwater_htm1.htm
So this is what I figured based on what we have so far:
Water collected per:
Year: 1125 m2 (area of roof for small field) x .825 (ave rain fall for Somkhele) x .90 (efficiency) =835 m3
Day: 835.31/685 = 2.29m3 (2288.5 liters)
Person: 2288/20 (Liters/day) = 114 people
In our area the population is 200-300 people per km2... so theoretically we could supply enough water for about half the people in the area of our field (from what I read 1 Km is about as far as someone could carry enough water for each day (still three trips)). That is if you can collect all the water that falls with 10% runoff for contaminated water. I think there is also a lot of potential for that 10% that is not drinkable... such as weeping it into the field. Im workin on it.
I am also working on the barrel size based on the calcs above: here are two options.

There is a great example of a plastic tarp with thaching over it.
Also: I looked up 4mm plastic sheeting... it is basically the equivalent of plaexi-galss. Im not sure if that is what we are really looking for. Sheet metal while not a great option will provide a 90% efficiency that we a re looking for for water collextion. I also looked for product/cost info about the roof membrabrain (fabric) idea I had last weeked without much luck. So basically Im no help.
Re:Presentation Materials
With 19 days left we really need to start making some decisions and run with them. I would like to also include a 3d axon diagram of our water collection system if we have time. Talk to you guys tomorrow!
